Three Anderson staff members have been awarded the 4th
annual Abe Ackerman Staff Excellence Award. Andrea Stein,
director of academic personnel, Marta Klock, financial aid
director and Ruben Silva, facilities manager of the executive
education program, were presented earlier this year with
the award. The award was created by Anderson faculty, staff
and alumni as a memorial to the late Abe Ackerman, a beloved
Anderson School employee who died in 1997. The winners were
selected from a pool of 38 nominees…. Chemical engineering
Professor Sheldon K. Friedlander received the Christian
Junge Award from the European Aerosol Association in recognition
of his pioneering research. Friedlander is the author of
“Smoke, Dust and Haze: Fundamentals of Aerosol Behavior,”
a textbook used for introductory physics classes at universities
worldwide…. The Academic Senate’s Committee
on Diversity & Equal Opportunity has awarded the Fair
& Open Academic Environment Award for 1999-2000 to Josephine
Isabel-Jones, professor of clinical pediatrics, for her
valuable service in the recruitment and admissions of disadvantaged
students to the UCLA Medical School; to graduate student
Juan Muñoz in the Graduate School of Education &
Information Studies for his involvement in the development
and execution of the UCLA summer academic bridge program
for migrant students; and Ronni Sanlo, director of the Lesbian,
Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Campus Resource Center, for her
extraordinary efforts in support of fairness, tolerance
and social justice not only within the UCLA community, but
at the city, state and national levels.
