HONORS

The Alliance for Children's Rights awarded its 2000 Francis M. Wheat Community Service Award to pediatrician Robert F. Morris for his commitment and service to children in Los Angeles.... Martin Shapiro, professor of medicine, has received the Article-of-the-Year Award for outstanding published research from the Academy for Health Services Research and Health Policy.... Dean Robert Lapiner of UCLA Extension recently presented the Innovation Award for Creative Partnership at Extension's 5th Annual California Restaurant Industry Conference to Christine and Joachim Splichal, who have helped establish Los Angeles as one of the world's leading dining capitals. The Splichals are co-founders of a Los Angeles restaurant empire, the Patina Group.... Alfredo J. Artiles, assistant professor of education, received the 2001 Early Career Award of the American Educational Research Association's Standing Committee on the Role & Status of Minorities in Educational Research & Development.... Leonard Apt, professor of ophthalmology and emeritus head of pediatric ophthalmology at the Jules Stein Eye Institute, received the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Academy of Pediatrics. The academy presents this annual award to a physician whose career contributions to pediatrics education and scientific achievement deserve special recognition from the professional community.

UCLA KUDOS

Several External Affairs divisions received awards at the Council for the Advance-ment and Support of Education's District VII conference. University Communications' Marketing and Communication Services won Awards of Excellence in the categories of "Best University Web Site" for the UCLA Gateway and "Best Tabloid Newspaper" for UCLA Today, plus an Award of Distinction for UCLA Magazine in the writing category. Awards of Distinction were also given to the Development and the Special Events and Protocol divisions for "Frontiers of Knowledge - Collaborative Effort in Planning and Execution," and to Government and Community Relations for "Census 2000 Initiative - Community Relations."

APPOINTMENTS

Bruce Gerratt, director of speech pathology and audiology at UCLA Medical Center, was appointed to Gov. Gray Davis' Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Board. Gerratt, who also has been a professor-in-residence in head and neck surgery at UCLA for 20 years, is one of seven prominent speech and language specialists in California chosen.... Shlomo Benartzi, assistant professor of accounting at The Anderson School, will be sworn in on March 6 by U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine Chao to his appointed post on the Advisory Council on Employee Welfare and Pension Plans.... Nicholas C. Memmo, a partner in the Los Angeles-based venture-capital investment firm Kline Hawkes, was appointed recently to the Board of Advisors for the Harold Price Center for Entrepreneurial Studies in The Anderson School.
