APPOINTMENTS
The Anderson School announced the appointment of Professor John Hughes to its oldest endowed chair, the Ernst & Young Chair in Accounting. Hughes' research includes theoretical and empirical inquiries into a wide range of issues relating principally to incentive contracting, industrial organizations and capital markets. He is also co-founder and co-editor of the Review of Accounting Studies.... Sri Renganathan has joined External Affairs' Finance and Information Management division as controller and director of accounting, where he'll have responsibility for accounting, treasury and banking services for the UCLA Foundation, the UCLA Alumni Association and the Jonsson Cancer Center Foundation. He previously served as university controller for Cal State Los Angeles.
KUDOS
The National Stroke Association honored the UCLA Stroke Center as the inaugural recipient of the Stars for Stroke Award on Feb. 27 at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel. UCLA was recognized for being "one of the world's leading facilities in the treatment of stroke, with an expert staff devoted to improving patient outcomes and investigating new options for the future." ... The Daily Bruin took the title of Best All-Around Newspaper, according to results of the Society of Professional Journalists' Region 11 Mark of Excellence Awards. Region 11 covers campus publications in California, Nevada, Arizona, Hawaii and Guam. The Bruin took second place in the Sweepstakes, which tallies overall winning points. Overall, the Daily Bruin garnered 14 awards, including firsts for best sports column, general news reporting, in-depth reporting and general news photo.
GROUNDBREAKING
More than 175 prominent South Bay civic, philanthropic, political and health-care leaders gathered on the campus of Harbor-UCLA Research & Education Institute for groundbreaking ceremonies for the Liu Research Center. Officials later hosted a reception for donors/physicians Steve C.K. Liu and Milly Liang Liu. The center, slated for completion in 2002, will house outpatient research for the Harbor-UCLA General Clinical Research Center and the UCLA Center for Vaccine Research.
IN MEMORIAM
Beth Treadway, 58, a UCLA nurse for 36 years, died at her home of a long-term illness on March 19. She worked for 20 years in pediatrics, first as a clinical nurse and later as nursing director. Her last appointment was as an administrative nurse in Medical Center Computing Services on the Nursing Computer Team, from which she retired a few years ago. "She made many contributions to nursing, pediatrics and informatics during her time here and was highly valued by all who worked with her," said colleague Cathy Ward.
