HONOR ROLL

Peter Loewenberg, professor emeritus of history, has been elected to the Board of Trustees of The Sigmund Freud Archives, Inc., the trustee of the Freud Collection, Library of Congress, Washington, and the Freud Museum, London. A historian and political psychologist with a clinical practice in psychoanalysis, Loewenberg is also director of the Training School of the Southern California Psychoanalytic Institute.... Professor Robert Kirsner has been elected an honorary member by the Belgian Royal Academy for Dutch Linguistics and Literature. Professor Kirsner specializes in the growing field of Dutch studies at UCLA. He is the only American member of the academy.

NOTEWORTHY

Assemblyman Paul Koretz (D-West Hollywood) toured the UCLA Medical Center last month and met with campus leaders as part of a program by Government and Community Relations to familiarize elected officials with UCLA's efforts in teaching, research and public service. Koretz, a Bruin and freshman legislator from the 42nd Assembly District that includes UCLA, consulted with campus experts on possible solutions to today's complex health-care issues.... Critical Studies/Playwriting Professor Beverly Robinson of Theater, Film and Television has received the Ralph Bunche Trailblazer award from the UCLA Black Alumni Association for her pioneering efforts in teaching and research in the history of African-American theater, film and television, as well as African culture and folklore.

IN MEMORIAM

Harold Land, 73, a faculty member and tenor saxophonist regarded as a premier jazz improviser, died July 27 in Los Angeles following a stroke. Land joined the UCLA Jazz Studies Program as a lecturer in 1996 to teach instrumental jazz combo. "Harold Land was one of the major contributors in the history of the jazz saxophone," said jazz guitarist Kenny Burrell, founder and director of the UCLA Jazz Studies Program. "He was a vital and well-loved member of the jazz faculty here at UCLA." Land established himself as one of the most singular and powerful jazzmen, recording with bassists Red Mitchell and Curtis Counce. Among those he performed and/or recorded with were Wes Montgomery, Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans, Red Garland, Jimmy Smith, Nancy Wilson and Billie Holiday.

Gary T. Schwartz, 61, a gifted and popular law professor who was recognized nationally for his scholarship in the field of torts, died in his home July 25 of a brain tumor. Joining the UCLA faculty in 1969, he held the William D. Warren Chair. Commented Dean Jonathan Varat: "To his students he was boyish, endearing, encyclopedic and brilliant. He brought to his remarkable and insightful scholarship a deep sense of history, a pragmatic sense of economic reality and a keen sense of justice." Schwartz attended Cornell, graduated from Oberlin College and attended Harvard University Law School. A memorial service is planned for the fall.
