GRANTS

Barbara J. Gitlitz, a cancer physician and researcher at the Jonsson Cancer Center, has won a $487,000 grant from the National Center for Research Resources at the National Institutes of Health to study an experimental treatment for prostate cancer.... The Freeman Foundation has given a grant of $133,000 to ISOP's Center for East Asian Studies to facilitate three teacher training programs in the San Gabriel Valley.

HURRAH

Public Health Professor Susan Cochran received the Award for Distinguished Contributions to Research in Public Policy from the American Psychological Association, in recognition of her 20-year research career examining mental and physical health risk factors and prevention needs among gay men and lesbians in the United States.... Patricia Greenfield, professor of psychology, and Neal Halfon, professor of pediatrics and public health, have been appointed to the National Academies Board on Children, Youth and Families, which provides policy-makers and the public with authoritative, impartial analyses of child, youth and family issues.... Donna Kathryn McNeese-Smith, assistant professor of nursing, was recently recognized for her excellence as a teacher, receiving NurseWeek Magazine's third annual Nursing Excellence Award.

APPOINTMENTS

Allen F. Roberts, a cultural anthropologist and professor in the Department of World Arts and Cultures, recently became director of the UCLA James S. Coleman African Studies Center in ISOP.... Ruth Sabean, assistant director with the Office of Instructional Development, has also become assistant provost of educational technology in the College of Letters & Science....

Roxanne Moster was named director of health sciences communications. Formerly assistant director, Moster oversees the UCLA Medical Enterprise's contact with the media and other communications forums.... John B. Duncan, an associate professor in the Department of East Asian Language and Cultures, has been named director of the Center for Korean Studies in ISOP.

IN MEMORIAM

Irving Bernstein, 84, professor emeritus in political science, died Sept. 25 at a convalescent center near his home in Los Angeles. A renowned labor historian, he wrote the American labor movement classics: "The Lean Years: A History of the American Worker, 1930-1933," "The Turbulent Years: A History of the American Worker 1933-1941" and "A Caring Society." Arthur Schlessinger, Jr. once noted: "Irving Bernstein is pre-eminent among historians of American labor history." Bernstein started at UCLA as a research associate in the Institute of Industrial Relations in 1948 after graduating from Harvard with an M.A. and Ph.D. in history, and joined the Political Science Department in 1960. He was honored three times as professor of the year. A memorial service will be held Oct. 21, 1-3 p.m. at the Faculty Center. A reception will follow. To RSVP, call (310) 825-2163.
