Born in Kamakura, Japan, Murakami has lived in Los Angeles since he was 5. He graduated from UCLA in 1982 with a B.S. in atmospheric sciences, a field he chose when he was inspired by TV weatherman George Fishbeck. See Murakami's forecasts at www.atmos.ucla.edu/web/weather/.
What is your motto?
Treat all people with courtesy. Admittedly, I don't achieve 100% success, but I think I come close.
What is your most valued possession?
My CD collection of Mozart's music.
What is the best thing about your job?
Being paid to watch the weather. I also derive great satisfaction from helping others, from planning a vacation to choosing a wedding date.
