Hailing from Crystal Lake, Mich., she chose her field after "listening to my passion, my heart and working with my dreams." She was director of Chaplaincy Services at Alta Bates Medical Center in Berkeley before joining UCLA last year as associate director of the Spiritual Care Department. She was recently appointed director when the Rev. David Myler retired.
What is your greatest extravagance?
The Burke Williams spa in Santa Monica -- so I can be relaxed and centered for my work.
What is your favorite music?
Kitaro, whose music reaches a level of spaciousness I often experience when I meditate and pray.
What do you consider the most overrated virtue?
Charitable acts, which are lifesaving to individuals at a certain moment, but when charity is used when justice is needed, it's a diversion.
