The Undergraduate Council -- charged with reviewing UCLA's new comprehensive review admissions process --outlined several recommendations to the Academic Senate Feb. 12 with the intent of making the process more effective, reliable, fairer and more transparent.
"Overall, we were very impressed and endorsed the changes very strongly," said Raymond Knapp, chair of the Undergraduate Council. "But we did have a number of concerns. Some of these are not right now in our hands to do anything about, but we think we should try."
Currently, prospective UCLA students use a generic UC application form. But the council would like the application to include a checklist of supporting information, a section to be completed by a teacher or counselor to substantiate a student's life challenges and personal achievement and a way for students to include letters of recommendation. Since UCLA is part of the UC system, any changes in the application would have to be made with the cooperation of the other campuses, Knapp said.
The council also requested a "complete and detailed description of the criteria and procedures that are used in making admissions decisions," including the relative weights given to each area. The council also suggested that the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and Relations with Schools provide data after every admissions cycle for members' analysis.
