Edit Villarreal
Professor of theater in the School of Theater, Film and Television
Born in Brownsville, Texas, and raised in San Antonio ("I'm Tex-Mex through and through"), Villarreal received her B.A. in theater from UC Berkeley in 1967 and her M.F.A. in playwriting from the Yale School of Drama in 1986. Shortly after graduation, she began as a visiting lecturer at UCLA.

What is your most treasured possession?

I have a "flower" that my grandmother, who raised me until I was 6, gave to me. It's a bamboo stick with a small cloth thing stuck into one end of it. Since she told me it was a flower, it IS a flower.

What is the most overrated virtue?

Humility. The truly humble people never speak up, while the pseudo-humble people never shut up.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I would have curly hair. I would wear it all kinds of different ways, and do silly things with it.
