The 2002 Disneyland Resort Cast Community Fund
has awarded a $5,000 grant to UCLA’s TIES (Training,
Intervention, Education and Services) for Adoption Project.
The program is dedicated to preparing and supporting adoptive
families of children from foster care.... Daniel E.
Furst, the first Carl M. Pearson Professor of Rheumatology
in the Department of Rheumatology, has been honored with the
Jane Wyman Humanitarian Award. The award goes to individuals
who strive to further the mission of the Arthritis Foundation....
Ronald W. Busuttil, director of the Liver Transplant
Program and professor of surgery, has been elected to the United
Network for Organ Sharing Board of Directors as a medical/scientific
representative. He has held other positions on the organization’s
Liver Review Board, Liver and Intestinal Transplantation Committee
and the Intestinal Allocation Subcommittee.

Larissa V. Rodriguez, assistant
professor of urology, is one of 10 to receive one of the nation’s
first Jahnigen Career Development Scholar Awards, a new award
for the care of older people in surgical and related specialties,
from the American Geriatrics Society. Rodriguez will receive
a two-year, $200,000 award for her research using tissue-engineering
techniques to discover cures for stress urinary incontinence
among the elderly.... Shadi Ardalan, senior
artist in Development Communications, has been recognized by
the Corcoran College of Art and Design for her graphic design
work on UCLA publications and event materials. Her works will
be highlighted in exhibitions and a commemorative catalogue,
and will be used as examples in teaching graphic arts.... Donald
Morrison, a marketing professor and the William E.
Leonhard Chair in Management at The Anderson School, was recently
presented with the 2002 American Marketing Association/ Irwin/McGraw-Hill
Distinguished Marketing Educator of the Year Award, the highest
honor a marketing educator can receive. Recipients must be universally
acknowledged as long-standing leaders in marketing education....
Walter R. Allen, professor of sociology and
African-American studies, received the DuBois-Johnson-Frazier
Award from the American Sociological Association. The award
honors scholars who embody the intellectual traditions of W.E.B.
DuBois, Charles S. Johnson and E. Franklin Frazier. Allen was
recognized for his research contributions in the fields of the
African-American family, higher education and the demography
of race.... Warren Thomas, chief administrative
officer of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, was
appointed assistant dean of the Division of Physical Sciences
in the College of Letters and Science. He will oversee all operational
and staff functions of the division.... Michael Stenstrom,
associate dean and professor of civil and environmental engineering,
received an award for innovation in water quality protection
from the California Regional Water Quality Control Board, in
part for his contributions to storm water research. His projects
include the development of a land-use and drainage model for
the Santa Monica Bay watershed.
