Lee was born in Clarinda, Iowa (Glenn Miller’s
birthplace, he points out), and received his bachelor’s
and master’s degrees from Drake University and his doctorate
in conducting from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory
of Music. He taught at the University of Texas, Austin, before
coming to UCLA in 1985.
What is your greatest extravagance?
Living on a sailboat for seven years (I am ashore at present).
What is your favorite type of music
or favorite musical group?
Classical guitar and great choral music. Also, of course, the
UCLA Wind Ensemble.
What do you consider the most overrated
virtue?
Patience. It is very difficult to have great passion and be
patient.
