Faculty members who earned tenure last spring
after years of hard work were hailed by their colleagues, alumni
leaders and guests at a reception Nov. 19 hosted by the UCLA
Alumni Association at the James West Alumni Center.
The second annual Faculty Tenure Reception honored
29 newly tenured professors, who received plaques recognizing
their achievement.
Among them was Michael Chwe of political science.
“I don’t know of any other university
that does this,” Chwe commented, adding, “I wish
I had brought my kids here so they could see their dad getting
an award.”
Academic tenure is essential for the protection
of academic freedom and is key to attracting the most promising
professors to the university, said Steven Halpern, chair of
the association’s Faculty and Campus Relations Committee.
“If we bring quality faculty to UCLA, quality students
will follow,” he said.
Among the faculty members eager to meet some
of UCLA’s newest professors was Law Professor Kenneth
Klee, who called them “an extraordinary group of people”
with diverse research interests that range from the study of
algae in estuaries and lagoons to legal procedure.
“It’s appropriate that the alumni,
who are the permanent stakeholders at UCLA, are honoring the
newest permanent members of the faculty — the scholars
charged with educating and challenging future gen-erations of
alumni,” said Alumni Association Executive Director Keith
Brant.
