Carlos Manuel Haro

CARLOS MANUEL HARO
Assistant Director, Chicano Studies Research Center

Raised in Boyle Heights, East Los Angeles, Haro received three degrees from UCLA: a B.A. in political science, an M.A. in curriculum and instruction, and a Ph.D. in comparative and international education, the last two from the Graduate School of Education & Information Studies. “My life, community service and scholarly work have always been tied to the Chicano community,” Haro said.

What is your greatest extravagance?
Owning and maintaining a 1967 Mustang convertible (my wife thinks it is an extravagance while we are putting our daughters through college).

Who is your favorite hero of fiction?
Writer Tony Hillerman’s detective character, Lt. Joe Leaphorn, Navajo Police.

What is your greatest achievement?
A collaborative effort: my daughter’s graduation from UCLA in 2000.

What phrases do you most overuse?
I’m constantly asking others, “What do you think?”
