Born in Owensboro, Ky., Lockart moved with his
family to Canoga Park when he was 1. While a high school student,
Lockart spent many hours in metal shop and soon developed an
interest in building things. He worked in the aerospace prototype
industry before coming to UCLA in 1989.
What is your greatest extravagance?
My love of professional off-road racing and my off-road car,
Trigger.
What is the best thing about working
at UCLA?
All the unique people I encounter on campus every year.
What is the most unusual item you have
been asked to make in the shop?
All of our jobs are one-of-a-kind, but some of the strangest
requests have been from our demonstration department. For example,
we built a bed of nails that a professor would lie on and have
a brick crushed on his stomach with a sledgehammer.
