BRUIN WALK AND BEYOND

FELIZ CUMPLEAÑOS

Guatemalan twins Maria Teresa and Maria de Jesús Quiej Álvarez celebrated their second birthday — their first as separate individuals — July 25 at UCLA’s Mattel Children’s Hospital with balloons and birthday cakes. Maria de Jesús was discharged June 7, but is staying with a local volunteer and visits her sister frequently. Maria Teresa, who contracted E. coli meningitis in Guatemala eight months after the separation surgery, “suffered a very significant setback in her neurological development,” said Jorge Lazareff, lead neurosurgeon for the twins’ medical team.“Since returning to UCLA two months ago, her progress has been slow, but recently she has started to show signs of improvement.”

CRATER CREATION

The relationship between craters and the objects, such as meteorites, that may have created them led UCLA undergraduate Jun Uehara and Douglas J. Durian, professor of physics and astronomy, to reach new conclusions recently published in Physical Review Letters and reported on in Nature Science Update. After dropping balls of different sizes and densities from different heights into a variety of loose granular materials, Uehara and Durian concluded that the depth and diameter of the crater are not proportional, as assumed in previous studies.

SEEKING NOMINEES

Deadline is Aug. 29. For more information, contact Robyn Goldberg at RGoldberg@UCLAlumni.net or (310) 206-6062.

INTERIM STAGE

To prepare for the renovation and expansion of the Geffen Playhouse in Westwood, the final production of its 2003-04 season and the entire run of its 2004-05 season will move to the Brentwood Theatre. The 500-seat theater, owned by the Department of Veterans Affairs and located on the same property as the Wadsworth Theatre, will be the playhouse’s interim home until 2005 when renovations are complete. When the Geffen reopens, the Brentwood Theatre will be used for plays, small musicals, film screenings, concerts, dance and children’s theater, among other events.
