CONGRATS
Samuel Kaplan, professor emeritus of pediatric cardiology,
and Hillel Laks, professor and chief of cardiothoracic surgery and director
of the Heart and Heart-Lung Transplant Program, were honored as pioneers
in the field of congenital heart disease at an annual dinner hosted by
the Hertz Investment Group and philanthropist Judah Hertz. The sixth annual
event raised $155,000 for the Ahmanson/ UCLA Adult Congenital Heart Disease
Center.... Leonard Apt, professor emeritus of ophthalmology
and founding chief of the Division of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus,
has established the Leonard Apt Endowed Fellowship that will be available
in perpetuity and awarded to exceptional clinical fellows in pediatric
ophthalmology and strabismus at the Jules Stein Eye Institute. Apt is
a pioneer in the field of pediatric ophthalmology.... William
D. Warren, Connell Professor Emeritus at the School of Law, received
the Senator William Proxmire Lifetime Achievement Award from the American
College of Consumer Financial Services Lawyers. He was cited for his pioneering
work in consumer credit law.
KUDOS
The law school’s Class of 2003 chose Law Professor David
Sklansky Professor of the Year, an honor he also won in 1996.
Sklansky’s scholarship has focused on issues of criminal justice.
He served as associate dean in 2002-03.... Eric W. Fonkalsrud,
emeritus professor of surgery, has been elected to the Johns Hopkins University
Society of Scholars. Fonkalsrud and 14 other scientists, clinicians and
social scientists were honored by the society, which inducts former postdoctoral
fellows and junior or visiting faculty at Johns Hopkins who have distinguished
themselves in the humanities or in the physical, biological, medical,
social or engineering sciences.... The UCLA Foundation has named Herbert
Kawahara its president-elect. Kawahara, who will succeed Peter
J. Taylor as president, serves on the foundation’s Board of Directors
as well as its Diversity, Investment and Venture Capital Funds committees.
He is former president of the Pacific Exchange and a 1951 graduate of
UCLA.

Sherin Devaskar, professor of neonatology at the David
Geffen School of Medicine and chief of neonatology at Mattel Children’s
Hospital, has been named editor-in-chief of Pediatric Research, the official
journal of the American Pediatric Society, the European Society for Pediatric
Research, the Society for Pediatric Research and the European Society
for Pediatric Hematology and Immunology. The newly appointed associate
editors are Edward McCabe, physician-in-chief of Mattel
Children’s Hospital; Pinchas Cohen, professor and
chief of endocrinology; Yvonne Bryson, professor and
chief of pediatric infectious diseases; Christopher Denny,
professor of pediatric hematology and oncology; Martin Martin,
associate professor of pediatric gastroenterology; and Isidro
Salusky, professor of pediatric nephrology and director of the
Clinical Research Center.
