UCLA LIBRARY
Following a competitive bidding process, the UCLA Library has chosen
Endeavor Information Systems to provide its new online information system.
Voyager, Endeavor’s integrated information management system, features
a Web-based public access catalog, cataloging functions, acquisitions
and serials management, circulation services and course reserves. Work
on the new system will begin immediately, with the goal of launching the
public access catalog in fall 2004. Feedback from students, faculty and
staff was an important factor in the evaluation process, library administrators
said. Other major academic and research libraries using Voyager include
Columbia University, Cornell University, Getty Research Institute, the
Library of Congress, National Library of Medicine and Princeton University.

NEUROPSYCHIATRIC INSTITUTE
Drug abuse treatment admissions in five California counties rose as
much as 27% in the year following implementation of Proposition 36, UCLA
Neuropsychiatric Institute researchers report. The Substance Abuse and
Crime Prevention Act, enacted by voters in 2000, diverts nonviolent drug
offenders into county treatment programs. The study found increases in
drug abuse treatment in Kern (27%), Riverside (21%), Sacramento (17%)
and San Diego (16%) counties — primarily in outpatient drug-free
programs. The team found no increase in San Francisco County, a region
with a high number of preexisting alternatives to Proposition 36.
ANDERSON SCHOOL
Dean Bruce G. Willison of the UCLA Anderson School of Management announced
Oct. 13 his decision to step down at the conclusion of his five-year term
as dean at the end of next summer, 2004. “Serving my alma mater
as dean is an honor and a privilege,” Willison said. “This
difficult personal decision was reached solely so that I would have an
opportunity for an additional professional adventure during my career.”
Willison currently serves as a director of Health Net, Inc., SunAmerica,
Inc.’s fund complex and Homestore, Inc. “I am grateful to
Dean Willison for his outstanding service and commitment to the university,”
Chancellor Albert Carnesale said. “Over the next year, I look forward
to our continuing partnership as we work to achieve
our shared aspirations for both the Anderson School and UCLA.” |
