GALA WEEKEND
UCLA’s Homecoming & Parents’ Weekend is Oct. 24-26.
A wide range of events, created exclusively for new and sophomore Bruin
parents, will include faculty lectures, arts programs, campus tours and
a Bruin family barbecue. The weekend will also feature the Homecoming
Parade and football game against Arizona State at the Rose Bowl. Sunday
will bring a celebration of Founders Day, with a noon presentation at
Royce Hall. Chancellor Albert Carnesale will preside, with keynote presenter
Debbie Allen and a centennial tribute to alumnus and Nobel laureate Ralph
J. Bunche, Class of 1927. Faculty and staff are welcome to attend Founders

THE BIG SCREEN
Following a six-week summer renovation, movie fans will walk into a
James Bridges Theater featuring the new acoustics of Dolby digital and
DTS surround sound. The theater is the primary venue for the Film and
Television Archive. The makeover also included refurbished seats, handicapped
seating, a system to help the hearing-impaired, new carpeting and paint.
The renovation was funded by a gift from the Bridges/Larson Foundation.
Dolby, Digital Theater Systems, THX, QSC Audio and JBL donated equipment.
Patrons will now be able to order tickets in advance through www.cinema.ucla.edu.

Three Fidelity representatives will host “Planning Your Retirement
Income” workshops Oct. 28 at the Faculty Center and at the Moss
Auditorium in the UCLA Medical Center. The talks will focus on asset allocation
and accumulation strategies to insure that employees are on the right
track to reaching retirement goals. Workshops at the Faculty Center will
be held from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and in CHS A2-342 from 1:30 p.m. to

DIPLOMAT-IN-RESIDENCE
Don Terpstra, a senior foreign service officer with the U.S. Department
of State and the U.S. Information Agency, has been appointed as UCLA diplomat-in-residence.
Terpstra’s home base will be the Department of Policy Studies in
the School of Public Policy and Social Research. He is one of 16 such
officers serving at universities nationwide. As diplomat-in-residence,
Terpstra will counsel students on foreign service and other U.S. government
career options and conduct information sessions on the foreign service
exam. |
