COMPLIMENTS

Mike Franks, social sciences computing programmer, received the 2003 Frank Cofrancesco Excellence in Technology Award for bringing together programmers from all over campus to meet, share ideas and code, learn about campus tools and troubleshoot problems.... Six scientists at the Jonsson Cancer Center won U.S. Department of Defense grants to further their research in prostate and breast cancer: Public Health and Environmental Health Sciences Professor Curtis D. Eckhert; Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Pediatrics and Human Genetics Professor Wayne W. Grody; Hematology/Oncology Associate Professor Richard J. Pietras; Urology Associate Professor Robert E. Reiter; Hematology/Oncology Professor Kathleen M. Sakamoto; and Urology Assistant Professor Lily Wu. The grants range from $222,000 to $571,000.... Carlo Montemagno, professor and chair of bioengineering, received the Feynman Prize in Nanotechnology (Experimental) at the 11th Foresight Conference on Molecular Nanotechnology. He is co-director of the UCLA Institute for Cell Mimetic Space Exploration and also holds the Roy and Carol Doumani Chair in Biomedical Engineering.

FELICITATIONS

“Brown Tide Rising: Metaphors of Latinos in Contemporary American Public Discourse” (University of Texas Press, Austin), an exploration of racism in the media by UCLA College linguist Otto Santa Ana, was chosen Best Book of the Year on Ethnic and Racial Political Ideology and/or Political Theory by the American Political Science Association’s Section on Race, Ethnicity and Politics. He is an associate professor in the César E. Chávez Center for Chicana/o Studies.... Richard A. Gatti, professor of pathology and laboratory medicine, received a lifetime achievement award from the Ataxia-Telangiectasia Medical Research Foundation for his pioneering efforts in cloning the A-T gene and his continued progress in researching new therapies for the genetic disorder.... Molecular, Cell and Developmental Biology Professor Bob Goldberg received the Ohio University Distinguished Alumni Award from the university’s College of Arts and Sciences. He is one of the nation’s best-known plant molecular biologists.... Paul Thompson, an associate adjunct professor of neurology, received the annual Turken Scholarship Award for young investigators conducting Alzheimer’s disease research. The $18,000 award supports Thompson’s ongoing development of imaging strategies for tracking Alzheimer’s disease in the brain.

IN MEMORIAM

Gertrude Huberty Warren, former director of UCLA’s Chronic Pulmonary Department, professor of clinical medicine and assistant director of the UCLA Student Health Service, died in her home in Pacific Palisades on Oct. 13. She was 98.

Hurberty received her B.S. degree from the University of California in 1925 and her M.D. degree from Johns Hopkins University in 1930. She was the only student from California in 1926 accepted by Johns Hopkins University Medical School and was later unanimously elected president of the Johns Hopkins Alumnae Association of Southern California, the first time a woman had been so honored.

Huberty’s research pioneered treatment for the prevention and control of lung and infectious diseases. She was awarded the title of Fellow by the American College Health Association and served as president for Pacific Coast Section, American Health Association; Faculty Women’s Club; Gold Shield; and was a member of the National College Health Association Tuberculosis Committee.

She was known as a dedicated, caring physician active in her profession throughout her lifetime. She served as a role model and mentor to thousands of students as well as to her family.

She was married to Professor Martin R. Huberty of UCLA, Dean of Agriculture. In 1970, she married Stafford L. Warren, founding dean of the UCLA School of Medicine (1970-1980).

A memorial service and reception will be held on Sunday, Nov. 23 at the UCLA Faculty Club at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Gertrude Hurberty Warren scholarship fund, UCLA Faculty Women’s Club, P.O. Box 49363, Los Angeles, 90049-0363.
