BUREAU BRIEFS
SCHOOL OF LAW: Professor Norman Abrams will become interim dean of the School of Law on Aug. 16, pending approval by the UC Board of Regents. … UCLA MEDICAL CENTER: UCLA Medical Center moved up to No. 3 in the nation while maintaining its top ranking as the best hospital in the western United States for the 14th consecutive year, according to a U.S. News & World Report survey of 2,550 board-certified physicians from across the country. … ATHLETICS: Winning women athletes from UCLA who brought to Westwood three NCAA team championships in 2002-03 were honored June 27 by the Los Angeles City Council, represented by Councilmembers Jack Weiss, Wendy Greuel, Cindy Miscikowski and Ed Reyes, all UCLA alumni.

UCLA has been selected to lead a new, multimillion-dollar research center for semiconductor research.

CAMPUS UNITS DEAL WITH STATE BUDGET CUTS
The 2003-04 state budget recently signed by Gov. Gray Davis makes $410 million in state funding cuts to the University of California — $20.5 million to UCLA — and its effects are already being felt.

SCHOLARS MEET FOR ‘ELECTRONIC ENLIGHTENMENT
The 18th century “went native” when it was revived earlier this month in Los Angeles as nearly 1,000 scholars converged at UCLA for the quadrennial congress of the International Society of Eighteenth-Century Studies.

CODE OF CONDUCT: The University of California Board of Regents put faculty on notice recently that they will be violating a newly revised code of conduct and could be subject to disciplinary action if they have a consensual romance or sexual relationship with any student for whom they have academic responsibility now — or in the future ... FROM THE GROUND UP: UCLA administrators and dignitaries broke ground July 29 for a facility that will house the Research Building II and the Orthopaedic Hospital Research Building on the southeast corner of Charles Young Drive and Manning Avenue… NEW LEADERSHIP: Members of UCLA’s Staff Assembly recently elected a new slate of officers for 2003-04… DISASTER RESPONSE: The July 16 Santa Monica Farmer’s Market crash that killed 10 and injured 70 pulled into action emergency physicians and nurses, orthopaedic trauma specialists, pediatric intensive care doctors, cardiologists and a host of other specialists and medical students at UCLA hospitals in Westwood and Santa Monica.

Henry J. Bruman fell in love with chamber music when he attended free summer concerts as a student at UC Berkeley. To share his passion with others, this UCLA emeritus professor of geography has been treating campus audiences to free summer chamber music festivals since the late ‘80s.

TWO BRUINS HONORED AT THE WHITE HOUSE
Two UCLA luminaries — basketball legend John Wooden and Professor Emeritus James Q. Wilson — received the nation’s highest civilian award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, from President George Bush at a White House ceremony July 23.

$5M GIFT TO BUILD BILLY WILDER THEATER AT THE HAMMER
Audrey L. Wilder, widow of celebrated writer-director Billy Wilder, has given the UCLA Hammer Museum $5 million to build the Billy Wilder Theater, which will become the new home of the UCLA Film and Television Archive’s public screenings.

FUNDING STAYS PUT: A UC regents committee on finance defeated a proposal by Regent Ward Connerly last month to pull UC funding and sponsorship from events, such as commencement celebrations, that are held by groups of a specific race, ethnicity or sexual orientation. ... LIFE OUT THERE: UCLA’s Center for Astrobiology has been awarded $5 million of additional research support over five years by NASA for its project, “From Stars to Genes: An Integrated Study of the Prospects for Life in the Cosmos.” ... INVISIBLE WOUNDS: According to UCLA researchers, a survey of a U.S.-based Latino immigrant population shows that more than half have been exposed to political violence, including torture, in their homeland. ... FIRST FOR CHICANO STUDIES: The University of California has approved a proposal by UC Santa Barbara to establish the nation’s first doctoral program in Chicano studies.
