Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky recently received the inaugural UCLA Local Legislator of the Year Award at a reception culminating UCLA Day with Local Government, an annual effort dedicated to communicating UCLA’s messages to Los Angeles city and county elected officials.

The award recognizes an elected official for significant contributions to local government, the community and UCLA. Yaroslavsky, a Los Angeles city councilman from 1975-94 and a supervisor since 1994, earned a B.A. in economics and history in 1971 and an M.A. in history in 1972 from UCLA.

“For almost 30 years, Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky has been a steadfast advocate for our community and for UCLA,” Chancellor Albert Carnesale said. “UCLA is proud to count him among our many distinguished alumni.”

UCLA will make a donation in Yaroslavsky’s name to the School of Public Policy and Social Research to help support a summer internship for a student whose specific interest is public service.

Yaroslavsky called UCLA “a huge economic engine” and praised the university’s commitment to the community. “UCLA gave me an opportunity to have not just schooling, but an education,” he said.

Carnesale also recognized alumnus and former Los Angeles County District Attorney Gil Garcetti for his artistic contribution to the Los Angeles region by presenting him with a framed Los Angeles Times Magazine cover featuring his photograph of the recently completed Walt Disney Concert Hall. Garcetti, a School of Law graduate, served as district attorney from 1992-2000.

Prior to the reception at Walt Disney Concert Hall, key alumni met with city and county leaders to talk about UCLA’s mission of research, teaching and community involvement.

“This event provides a valuable opportunity for UCLA to strengthen our relationships with local leaders as we work together to achieve our shared aspirations for Los Angeles,” Carnesale said.
