HOMAGE TO BLACK HISTORY

The UCLA Bunche Center for African American Studies is hosting a series of events during Black History Month. “Black History Month is a time for us to take a step back and think about the various struggles and contributions of African Americans in our history,” said Darnell Hunt, director of the center. “While our center presents events throughout the year, we take great pride in the events we have scheduled for this month, given the 35th anniversary of our center, the 50th anniversary of Brown vs. Board of Education and the centennial of Ralph Bunche’s birth.” The events include a forum on diversity in the entertainment industry, which will be co-sponsored by Congresswoman Diane Watson, D-Los Angeles, and a symposium on the collaboration of Bunche and scholar Gunnar Myrdal. For details on all the events, go to www.bunchecenter.ucla.edu.

HEAR THE CANDIDATES

UCLA Government and Community Relations will host an Assembly District 47 Candidates Forum Feb. 12 from 6-8:30 p.m. at the James West Alumni Center with Patt Morrison, four-time Emmy Award-winner and Los Angeles Times columnist, as moderator. All seven candidates running for the State Assembly in District 47, in which UCLA is located, are slated to participate. The forum takes place two weeks prior to the March 2 vote. To RSVP, call (310) 794-6810 or e-mail advocacy@support.ucla.edu.

SUMMER CAMP FOR SCHOLARS

Students who excel in math and science can spend four weeks at UC Davis, Irvine or Santa Cruz this summer in small classes studying astronomy, marine mammal biology, robotics and more. The California State Summer School for Mathematics & Science is a residential program for talented, motivated students who are completing grades 8-12 at public or private schools. Students will run experiments, conduct fieldwork and attend lectures given by UC faculty and master high school teachers. Selection is based on standardized test scores, grade point average and achievement in science projects and/or competitions, among other factors. Tuition, which covers room and meals, transportation and other expenses, is $1,212 for California residents. More than a third of the students usually receive full or partial financial aid to attend. For details, go to www.ucop.edu/cosmos. Deadline to apply is March 15.

SEEKING COMMUNITY PARTNERS

In an effort to assist community-based organizations applying for funding, the UCLA Center for Community Partnerships is sponsoring a free proposal workshop 3-5 p.m. on Feb. 12 in the Mark Taper Auditorium of the Central Public Library in downtown Los Angeles. Open to community-based organizations with valid IRS 501(c)3 status interested in applying for funding from the center, the workshop will focus on program guidelines, allowable budgets, partnership requirements and the electronic submission process. Established in 2002, the UCLA Center for Community Partnerships has awarded nearly $1 million in grants to nonprofit organizations since its inception.
