'round and about
IN THE KNOW
A panel of UCLA experts with years of experience in state and national
government participated March 4 in a post-election wrap-up moderated
by Dean Barbara J. Nelson of the School of Public Policy and Social
Research. Contributing their insights were Michael Dukakis, former
governor of Massachusetts, Democratic nominee for president in 1988
and visiting professor of policy studies; Richard Katz, former California
Assembly member, who recently taught urban planning courses at UCLA;
Daniel Mitchell, professor of policy studies and management, who
holds the Ho-Su Wu Chair in Management; and Steve Olsen, vice chancellor
of finance and budget and a former deputy director of the California
Department of Finance. Dukakis, whose former lieutenant governor
is presidential hopeful John Kerry, predicted a “tough, no-holds-barred,
not-so-nice campaign.”
IN HONOR OF CAREGIVERS
UCLA Early Care and Education is celebrating 35 years of child
care on campus with a gala dinner honoring June Solnit Sale, who,
as director of UCLA Child Care Services in 1978, revitalized child-care
operations on campus. Also being recognized for her dedication is
teacher Katie Love. The April 25 dinner, to be held at the Olympic
Collection, 11301 Olympic Blvd., will include a silent auction and
tribute journal dedicated to the honorees and featuring UCLA’s
three child-care centers. Honorary dinner co-chairs are actor John
Lithgow and director Rob Reiner. Those in the UCLA family who have
benefited from the services of UCLA Early Care and Education are
invited to join in the celebration. For an invitation or details
on placing an ad in the tribute journal, e-mail ece35@be.ucla.edu
or call (310) 794-4286.
STAFF ASSEMBLY AWARDS
UCLA Staff Assembly is accepting nominations for several awards
to be presented in June to outstanding staff and faculty. The $5,000
Excellence in Service Award goes to a staff member who demonstrates
commitment to the university’s mission through contributions
and achievements that consistently exceed his or her job requirements.
The Faculty/Staff Partnership Awards honor faculty members who recognize
the value of collaboration and collegiality. Finally, staff may
apply for 10 scholarships of up to $350 to pay for additional education
and training. Nominations are due by April 16. Applications, nomination
forms and other details are available at http://uclasa.chr.ucla.edu.
