Donations to United Way of Greater Los Angeles helped hundreds of thousands gain literacy and learning skills.

You too can proudly say, 'I gave at the office'

One of the first things that Joan Kollar did after joining the staff at UCLA was to start a payroll deduction for United Way. That was 20 years ago and she hasn’t missed a month since.

“It’s absolutely painless. I don’t even notice it,” said Kollar, director of human resources at UCLA Extension and the mother of two young children.

Kollar said she likes the fact that United Way helps a broad spectrum of people in a variety of ways. With help from United Way of Greater Los Angeles, 850,000 people have improved their literacy and learning skills while nearly 25,000 have freed themselves from the cycle of poverty and taken their first steps toward self-sufficiency. More than 715,000 people received the help they needed during a medical emergency or other critical times.

Staff and faculty who haven’t already done so will have a chance to help in these efforts by joining the 2004 UCLA United Way campaign, which will take place April 5 through April 16.

“Just as the university faces tough budget times, many of our fellow Angelenos also struggle with economic difficulties,” said Chancellor Albert Carnesale. “We at UCLA can help assist our less fortunate neighbors through generous support of the United Way.”

Contribution forms will be available to faculty and staff in a United Way packet arriving in campus mail April 5. Contributors may choose among three giving options: a general donation to United Way’s “Bridging the Gap” Fund; targeted giving in the areas of learning, empowering or caring; or a designated gift to any among more than 200 United Way partner agencies. While gifts may be made as a single donation, many faculty and staff, like Kollar, donate through payroll deduction.

Campus organizers hope the 2004 campaign will top last year’s effort, which collected more than $200,000. For more information, visit www.ucla.edu/unitedway.
