LAURELS FROM LEGISLATORS
School of Theater, Film and Television Professor Jose Luis Valenzuela,
founder and artistic director of the Latino Theater Company, was
among eight distinguished Latino artists, writers, journalists,
poets and others honored by legislators in the California Assembly
May 3 for their contributions to the arts and journalism. The honorees
were also given the 2004 Latino Spirit Award from 24 Democratic
senators and Assembly members in the California Latino Legislative
Caucus. Among those selected were Michele Serros, author of “How
to Be a Chicana Role Model”; actress and writer Evangelina
Fernandez; David Busbal, who received a 2003 Latin Grammy; Rick
Rodriguez, executive editor and senior vice president of The Sacramento
Bee; and the late Frank del Olmo, associate editor and columnist
for the Los Angeles Times.
IN THE TOP 10
The School of Nursing ranks 10th in the nation for its master’s
programs in nursing, according to the U.S. News & World Report’s
2004 survey of America’s best graduate schools. A two-year
course of study, UCLA’s master of science in nursing curriculum
prepares graduates for careers in advanced clinical practice or
nursing management. For the first time, the school’s nursing-administration
graduate program also ranked in the top 10. The goal of the two-year
specialty is to prepare advanced-practice nurses for leading administrative
roles within acute care, ambulatory care and community-based settings.
“We are thrilled that our academic peers regard the curriculum,
faculty and graduates of the UCLA School of Nursing in such high
esteem,” said Dean Marie Cowan. “This is a wonderful
honor.”
SURVEY RESEARCH SERVICES
The Survey Research Group that had been operating within the Institute
for Social Science Research at UCLA is now the Survey Research Center
(SRC) in the Division of General Internal Medicine-Health Services
Research in the Department of Medicine. Originally founded in 1966,
the Survey Research Group had been operating for more than 30 years
on campus. Under the Department of Medicine, the SRC is offering
faculty investigators in the health sciences and in other fields
across the campus services performed by an expert team of survey
research technicians specializing in study design, sample design
and development, interviewing and data processing, among many other
services. Research conducted by SRC encompasses a broad range of
health and social phenomena involving a variety of methodologies.
Services range from consultation on any aspect of survey research
to full-scale implementation of a survey project. For more information,
