Banks, a native Angeleno, received a B.A. in political science from UC San Diego in 1988 and earned his M.Ed. and J.D. degrees from the University of San Diego in 1995. Before arriving at UCLA in September 2001, he worked at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, as director of educational equity programs and as university ombudsman.

What is your greatest extravagance?
My vintage upright Ms. Pac-Man and Galaga games.

What is your favorite type of music (or favorite musical group)?
Prince, of course.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?
Getting my J.D. and M.Ed. at the same time while working full time as a university administrator.

Who is your favorite hero of fiction?
Batman. He fights bad guys, has really cool gadgets and is rich!
