SCHOOL OF LAW

Michael H. Schill, professor of law at New York University and director of the Furman Center for Real Estate and Urban Policy, has been selected as dean of the School of Law, effective Aug. 1, subject to approval by the UC Board of Regents. “Michael Schill is a respected scholar, impressive administrator and dedicated teacher,” Chancellor Albert Carnesale said. “He has outstanding qualifications to lead UCLA’s law school into the future, including experience at two top-10 law schools and nine years as director of the Furman Center.” Schill, 45, is a nationally recognized expert on American housing law and policy. He succeeds Jonathan Varat, who returned to teaching last year.

UCLA COLLEGE

Emil Reisler, a longtime academic leader at UCLA and a renowned biochemist whose work explores the functioning of proteins at the molecular level, has been named dean of life sciences in the UCLA College. Reisler’s appointment, which is pending approval by the UC Board of Regents, takes effect July 1. Reisler currently is acting dean of life sciences, a role he assumed when then-Dean Fred Eiserling retired in 2003. As dean, Reisler also will be senior associate dean for life sciences in the David Geffen School of Medicine.

UCLA LIBRARY

The UCLA Library will launch its new online catalog system on July 7. It will be available at http://catalog.library.ucla.edu. Users will notice several improvements over the current ORION2 catalog: faster responses and the ability to learn the status of items on order or being processed. Users can search ORION2 and request items from the Southern Regional Library Facility or document delivery through July 6. Renewals and recalls will be available through July 3. Library staff will assist users throughout the transition; however, all campus libraries will be closed July 4-5 for the holiday (except the Biomedical Library, which will be open July 5). For details, visit click “News.”

UCLA STAFF

Save the date of July 29 for the first annual All-Staff Picnic at UCLA, to be held 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. in Dickson Court. The event is being sponsored by the Chancellor’s Office and UCLA Staff Assembly, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary. All staff members will soon receive an e-mail invitation.
