FINAL COUNT
The results of the 2004 Academic Senate elections are in. The Senate’s
new vice chair/chair-elect is Adrienne Lavine, professor of mechanical
engineering. Since 1990, Lavine has served on a number of key Senate
committees. Elected to the Committee on Committees, which devotes
most of its time to staffing the 22 standing Senate committees,
were Antonio Quicoli, professor of Spanish and Portuguese; Victoria
Marks, professor of world arts and cultures; Ajit Mal, professor
of engineering; Hany Elsaleh, assistant professor of radiation oncology;
and Elisabeth Le Guin, assistant professor of musicology.
RESEARCH LECTURESHIP
The Academic Senate has selected two Faculty Research Lecturers
for 2004-05. They are H. Ronald Kaback, professor of physiology,
microbiology and molecular genetics and an investigator in the Howard
Hughes Medical Institute, and Carroll B. Johnson, professor of Spanish
and Portuguese, who is regarded as North America’s greatest
living scholar of Cervantes, author of Don Quixote de la Mancha.
Kaback is internationally known for his discovery of how lactose
is transported across the membranes that form cell boundary surfaces.
NEW LEADERSHIP
Staff Assembly recently announced the results of an election for
the 2004-05 Executive Board. The new board will include President
Hassan Ghamlouch of Business and Administrative Services (BAS);
President-Elect Doug Padley of Campus Human Resources; Vice President
of Events Samantha Chan of BAS; Vice President of Information Systems
Dorothy Fletcher of the Institute of the Environment (IoE); Vice
President of Outreach Shelley Brown of Corporate Financial Services;
Vice President of Programs Sarah Gamble of Communications Technology
Services; Historian/Secretary Gena Perrine of the Chancellor’s
Office; Treasurer Evelyn Leon of IoE; and Immediate Past President
Susan Corley of the Anderson School.
AND THE WINNERS ARE ...
The staff of UCLA Today wants to thank everyone who took the time
