PARKING FEES GO UP

Various campus parking fees will go up July 1 to help cover increases in debt for new structures and increased costs related to operating and maintaining existing facilities. But the increases will be slightly less than originally proposed in March 2003. That’s because Transportation Services was able to reduce expenses by restructuring debt at a lower interest rate, replacing the Lot 32 parking kiosk with a self-service payment station and eliminating the cost of stack parking, among other measures, said Director Renee A. Fortier. Parking Services, which receives no state funds, is supported solely by revenues generated by fees. Watch www.transportation.ucla.edu/parking/parkrate.htm for details on the new parking fees.

NCAA CHAMPIONS

UCLA is ending this academic year with NCAA team championships in four sports, more than any other school in the nation: women’s gymnastics, softball, women’s golf and women’s track and field. The gymnastics and track-and-field teams won their fifth titles overall, while softball earned its 10th title and golf its second. The Bruins finished second in three other sports: men’s golf and men’s and women’s tennis. UCLA also won eight conference titles (Pac-10 or Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) while 13 Bruin teams finished in the top seven nationally in their respective sports. UCLA placed third in competition for the Directors’ Cup, which is presented annually by the National Association of Collegiate Athletic Directors, USA Today and the U.S. Sports Academy. With the women’s athletic victories this year, the Bruins continue to lead the nation with 94 NCAA team titles.

CURTAIN TO RISE

Amidst mounds of dirt and earthmovers inside the gutted Geffen Playhouse, Producing Director Gil Cates broke ground June 10 for a $17-million project to renovate the interior of the 1929 structure and to build the 125-seat Audrey Skirball Kenis Theater on an adjacent lot. The project will result in better seats, acoustics and sightlines, and larger restrooms and theater lobby. More than half of the $25 million needed for the project and an endowment fund has already been raised. Chancellor Albert Carnesale hailed the bond between the Geffen and UCLA as “very strong and productive.” Through the Geffen, UCLA students serve internships, interact with renowned artists and attend master classes. During construction, Geffen productions are being performed at the Brentwood Theatre until September 2005. For details, visit www.geffenplayhouse.com.

SUMMER HIATUS

The BruinGo! Transit Pass Program with the Big Blue Bus and Culver CityBus is currently taking a summer break and will resume on Sept. 20. To ride the Big Blue Bus or Culver CityBus during the summer, UCLA staff, faculty and students will need to pay the full 75-cent fare instead of using their BruinCard or Flash Pass. Effective June 28, campus shuttle service was changed to streamline routes, consolidate bus stops and minimize travel and wait time. To find out the latest on BruinGo! and obtain more information and a printable copy of the new routes, visit www.transportation.ucla.edu.
