CYNTHIA BURLINGHAM

Director, Grunwald Center for the Graphic Arts and Deputy Director of Collections, Hammer Museum

A native of Los Angeles, Burlingham received an M.A. in art history from Oberlin College in Ohio. Before coming to UCLA in 1985, she worked at Sotheby’s auction house in New York City.

Who is your favorite hero of fiction?
Isabel Archer from Henry James’ “The Portrait of a Lady.”

If you hadn’t chosen your current occupation, what would you have chosen?
Maybe I would have been a veterinarian.

Of the many exhibitions you’ve curated, which has been your favorite?
There are two: One is the 1995 “French Renaissance in Prints,” because it was the chance to do an extended study of a period I’m very interested in, and the other is the 2001 “World From Here: Treasures of the Great Libraries of Los Angeles,” because it brought great collections from all over the city here to the Hammer.
