PHYSICS AND ASTRONOMY BUILDING

What: A four-story building with 40-to-200 seat classrooms, faculty and administrative offices, conference rooms, libraries, outdoor terrace and research labs on two below-grade levels. Three glass-enclosed bridges will connect it to Knudsen Hall.

Where: Located south of Powell Library, the building has a red-brick exterior that fits in with UCLA’s historic core and a sleek interior that reflects its contemporary uses.

Who: Ron Enholm manages the $44.9-million building project for Capital Programs. The executive architect is Anshen & Allen.

When: Some floors are already occupied. A departmental reception celebrating the opening is slated for Nov. 13.

Most unusual feature: The laboratories have been built on thicker-than-normal concrete floors and waffled floor slabs that resemble egg crates to control high levels of vibration.
