CONGRATS

Alan DeCherney, professor of obstetrics and gynecology and chief of the division of reproductive endocrinology and infertility at the David Geffen School of Medicine, has been elected to the prestigious Institute of Medicine of the National Academies. He is one of 65 new members added to the institute’s roster, bringing the total active membership to 1,416.... “Premeditation” by Alberto Barboza and “Pelea de Gallos” by Joel Juarez won best short film honors at the 8th Annual Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival. The two thesis films by the 2004 graduates of the School of Theater, Film and Television were selected from more than 40 short films from around the world.... The American College of Surgeons’ Trauma Verification Committee recently commended UCLA Medical Center’s trauma center as a Level 1 adult and pediatric trauma center. Verification by the committee recognizes the unit’s dedication to providing optimal care for injured patients.... Honored for his dedication both to health-care food service and to the American Society for Healthcare Food Service Administration, Carlton Green, director of nutrition at the UCLA Medical Center, received the Jacques Bloch Award, the highest honor the society can bestow on a member.... Bioengineering Professor Ben Wu was named an associate fellow of the Academy of Prosthodontics, the oldest and most prestigious professional organization in the specialty field of prosthetic dentistry.... To commemorate his contributions as a researcher, educator and author, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the American Society of Chemical Engineers recently awarded Vijay K. Dhir, dean of the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science, the 2004 Max Jakob Memorial Award.

Robert Rosen, dean of the School of Theater, Film and Television, received the Hollywood Film Preservation Award Oct. 18 at the Hollywood Film Awards gala ceremony for his dedication to preserving moving image media. The event at the Beverly Hilton Hotel was the final celebration of the Hollywood Film Festival honoring excellence in the art of filmmaking. For three decades, Rosen, former director of the UCLA Film and Television Archive, has been an international leader in the cause of film preservation.... Honored for his technical knowledge and work on various committees across campus, Peter Kovaric, director of the Education Tech Unit in the Department of Education, was named winner of the Frank Cofrancesco Excellence in Technology Award by Administrative Information Systems and the campus technology community.... On Sept. 8, Sharon Mack, nurse practitioner at the Ahmanson UCLA Cardiomyopathy Center, launched the American Association of Heart Failure Nurses, a national nonprofit professional nursing association whose mission is to advance heart failure practice, education, and research.... A new book by Burton R. Clark, UCLA professor emeritus in the Department of Education, was recently published. “Sustaining Change in Universities” (Open University Press) examines what can be done to ensure universities are well positioned to meet the many challenges of the 21st century.
