TOP TEACHERS
The Academic Senate is encouraging UCLA community members to participate
in the nomination process for the 2004-05 Distinguished Teaching
Awards. Anyone may submit a recommendation to a department chair
or selection committee. Each department, interdepartmental program
or institute may then submit one candidate for each of three categories:
Senate members, non-Senate members (lecturer, clinical and adjunct)
and teaching assistants. The final selection is made by the Senate’s
Committee on Teaching. The winners — five Senate members,
three non-Senate members and five teaching assistants — will
receive cash awards next fall at the Night to Honor Teaching. The
Senate winners will also be honored by the UCLA Alumni Association.
Entries must be received by Jan. 20, 2005, for Senate members; Feb.
17 for teaching assistants; and March 17 for non-Senate faculty.
LEGAL ADVOCATES
UCLA Student Legal Services (SLS), which provides legal information
and assistance to undergraduate and graduate students, celebrated
its 35th year by bringing back to campus the student leader who
helped get it off the ground. Keith Schiller obtained funding for
SLS when he was student body president in 1969. Schiller, who went
on to law school and now practices in Orinda, Calif., returned Nov.
4 to celebrate with current students and the SLS staff. In addition
to an office in Dodd Hall, SLS staffs a table at Ackerman Union
on the first and third Thursdays of each month for students who
seek legal advice. Go to www.studentlegal.ucla.edu
for more information.
CHARTER CLASS
UC Merced is preparing to receive its first applications from prospective
freshmen and transfer students who want to be among the first to
enroll at UC’s 10th campus next year. Fall semester will begin
Aug. 29, 2005, for an estimated 1,000 students. In addition to students
in the San Joaquin Valley, UC Merced also will admit all freshman
applicants who qualify under UC’s Eligibility in the Local
Context designation — those in the top 4% of their graduating
class. In its inaugural year, UC Merced will offer degree programs
with undergraduate- and graduate-level concentrations in approximately
20 disciplines.
