Gail
Wyatt, professor and clinical psychologist in the Department
of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences, was recognized at a special
United Nations Day presentation by the Los Angeles City Commission
on the Status of Women in partnership with Councilmember Eric Garcetti.
Wyatt was one of eight honorees whose life work reflects the spirit
embodied in this year’s United Nations Day theme, “Women’s
Rights and Empowerment: The Millennium Development Goals and Gender
Equity.” ... Dinner for 150 guests at the home of Michael
and Shari Weiner of Bel Air Crest on Sept. 18 raised roughly
$20,000 for UCLA Medical Center’s People-Animal Connection,
which provides pet therapy to hospitalized patients. The cocktail

party were followed by a silent auction.... Gary Nash,
professor emeritus in the Department of History and director of
the National Center for History in the Schools, was presented with
the Historical Society of Pennsylvania’s Founder’s Award
for Exemplary Service to History on April 17. Nash will also deliver
three lectures at Harvard University as part of the Nathan Huggins
Lectures. His lecture series is titled “African Americans
in the Revolutionary Era.” .... Steven M. Asch,
associate professor in residence in the Department of Medicine,
Veterans Affairs Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System, received
a 2004 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers,
the nation’s highest honor for professionals at the beginning
of their independent research careers.

Edwards, Henry Ford II Chair in International Management
and professor of global economics at the Anderson School of Management,
has been appointed to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Economic
Council, a 16-member panel that advises the governor on economic
matters.... The National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia
and Depression awarded a nearly $100,000 Independent Investigator
grant to Arthur L. Brody, associate professor in
residence in the Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences.
Brody will use imaging techniques to study the effects of nicotine
on the brains of people suffering from major depression to better
understand the link between depression and smoking.... The Disneyland
Resort Cast Community Fund has awarded a $5,000 grant to UCLA’s
TIES for Adoption Project. The UCLA-based program is dedicated
to preparing and supporting adoptive families of
children from foster care.... Vicente Honrubia,
professor emeritus of head and neck surgery and director of the
Victor Goodhill Ear Center at the David Geffen School of Medicine,
was honored with the 2004 George E. Shambaugh Prize in Otology for
his scientific contributions enhancing the understanding of the
auditory system and its disorders.... Maurice Zeitlin,
professor of sociology, has won the 2004 Max Weber Award for his
book “Left Out: Reds and America’s Industrial Unions,”
co-authored with Judith Stepan-Norris. The award was presented by
the Organizations, Occupations and Work Section of the American
Sociological Association.
