CYCLIST SANTAS

For the 15th year, more than 100 motorcyclists and friends from the Southern California Fullerton H.O.G. (Harley Owner’s Group) Chapter caravanned on bikes Nov. 21 to Mattel Children’s Hospital to deliver hundreds of holiday gifts to pediatric patients. Hospital staff and young patients greeted the bikers and got a chance to sit on the Harleys. Bikers formed a “love line” to unload hundreds of toys that will be distributed to pediatric patients over the holiday season and at other special events throughout the year.

EYE TO EYE

The Jules Stein Eye Institute (JSEI) Affiliates seeks volunteers to assist with two community outreach vision care programs targeting pre-school and elementary school youngsters. The Preschool Vision Screening program for children ages 3 to 5 screens for simple refractive errors and eye muscle problems. Volunteers participate in one screening per week. VISION In-School is aimed at those in grades 4 to 6 and provides a fun, interactive lesson covering eye anatomy and eye problems. This program requires a weekly two-hour time commitment from volunteers. To volunteer or for more information, contact volunteer coordinator Valerie Roach at (310) 206-7128 or valerie@jsei.ucla.edu.

LOVE LETTERS TO AUTHORS

The California Center for the Book, housed in the Graduate School of Education & Information Studies and affiliated with the Library of Congress, is holding its 22nd annual “Letters About Literature” contest. Students in grades 4-12 will compete in three categories by writing a personal letter to an author, explaining how his or her work changed their view of the world or themselves. Sponsored by the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress in partnership with Target Stores, the contest will award an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., for the winning student and his or her teacher and parents. Six national winners will each receive an expenses-paid trip to the nation’s capital to read their letters during the National Book Festival in the fall of 2005. Deadline for entries is Dec. 4. To obtain an entry coupon or more information, visit www.calbook.org or call (310) 206-9361.
