YESTERDAY, TODAY & TOMORROW

LABOR UPDATE

The University is working toward ensuring that all eligible employees will be able to participate in the 2004-05 Bonus Leave Program, which was created as one of several ways employees who have not received a general salary increase this year can be recognized and rewarded. However, since extending the bonus days to represented employees is, by law, subject to collective bargaining, the UC Office of the President has been negotiating with unions on this matter. UC and AFSCME, representing service workers, ratified an agreement on Nov. 19. The systemwide agreement resolves 2003-04 wage issues and gives AFSCME service workers the two-day paid bonus leave for 2004. In addition, UCLA has reached agreement with the Operating Engineers 501 on behalf of skilled craft employees on campus, making them eligible for bonus leave. As for the other unions, CUE and UPTE, negotiations are ongoing. UC and UCLA remain hopeful that an agreement with the unions can be reached. ON PARADE

Analia Quintanar, 19, who received a kidney from her identical twin, Liliana, at UCLA, will ride with her sister on a float in the Tournament of Roses on Jan. 1 to represent the many families who have benefited from the gift of organ and tissue donation. Since her transplant on Jan. 21 through the medical center’s Pediatric Kidney Transplantation Program, Analia has been able to lead a normal life. “Both of the girls are living life to the fullest,” said Robert Ettenger, physician-director of the Pediatric Renal Transplant Program at Mattel Children’s Hospital. “One is going to get married, and the other is studying to be a nurse. Neither one would have really been in a celebratory mood for the New Year before this gift of life.” Analia, who was born with kidney problems, received her mother’s kidney when she was 5, but it started to fail when she was 15. UCLA Healthcare is an official partner of the Donate Life Rose Parade Float, which is spearheaded by OneLegacy, the organ donation network serving Southern California.

A PERFECT EVENING

Each year, the Alumni Association sponsors Dinners for 12 Strangers as a way to help personalize the UCLA experience. Alumni open their homes to students, faculty and staff for small dinner parties, bringing them together in a warm, friendly environment for good food, conversation and Bruin camaraderie. Faculty and staff participation provide the link between students and alumni — an invaluable contribution to any dinner. If you are interested in participating this year as a host, co-host, faculty or staff guest, visit www.UCLAlumni.net/D12 or contact Kristina Dodd-Hansen at (310) 794-4306. Dinners will take place this year on Feb. 26, March 5 and March 6.
