'ROUND AND ABOUT
A GREAT START
Start the new year motivated. The 2005 UCLA Women’s Conference,
set for Jan. 29 at Covel Commons, will present women leaders from
diverse fields and professions who will talk about careers, investment
strategies, business ownership, and motivation and inspiration in
times of change. Giving keynote addresses will be Beverly Kaye,
founder and CEO of Career Systems International; Beth Sestanovich,
publisher of L.A. and O.C. Weeklies; and Susan Love, physician,
president and medical director of the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation.
Hosted by the UCLA Alumni Association and Anderson Alumni, the conference
will bring together women in academia, politics, the media, business,
finance and other areas. Fees for registration vary, but if you
register before Jan. 19, there is a discount. For details on this
daylong conference, go to www.UCLAlumni.net/WomensConference.
STAR LAUNCH
Actress Diane Keaton recently hosted an evening of tequila-tasting
and hors d’oeuvres at her Bel Air home to launch the building
of a $50-million endowment for UCLA’s surgeons. “Due
to federal and state budget problems, surgery departments across
our nation are seeing a drastic cut in funding,” said Ronald
Busuttil, chair of UCLA’s surgical department. “We are
grateful for Diane’s personal interest and efforts in helping
UCLA launch its campaign to build this much-needed fund.”
Said Keaton, “UCLA’s surgical department is a real treasure
— not only for those who live in Los Angeles but for patients
around the globe. The surgical department is among the top 15 in
the country and has the potential to affect so many lives in a positive
way. This is a true investment in our community’s future.”
HATS OFF
Winners of the 2005 UCLA Alumni Awards were recently announced
by Assistant Vice Chancellor of Alumni Relations Keith Brant. Alumnus
of the Year is Henry Samueli, UCLA professor of electrical engineering,
chairman of Broadcom Corporation and the philanthropist for whom
the engineering school is named. Other awardees include Ronald Sugar,
president and CEO of Northrop Grumman Corporation, for professional
achievement; Plinio Garcia, Jr., founder of Chef Merito, Inc., for
community service; Charles Hostler, international consultant, for
public service; and Ann Plauzoles, president of Gold Shield Alumnae
and longtime UCLA volunteer, for university service. An event honoring
them as well as outstanding students and distinguished faculty will
be held May 15 by the UCLA Alumni Association, which Brant leads
as executive director.
EXPLORING CHILDHOOD
The UCLA Graduate Division and the Foundation for Psychocultural
Research will present “Four Dimensions of Childhood: Brain,
Mind, Culture, and Time,” a conference that will explore the
interaction of social experiences and neurobiology during childhood
and their mutual influence on resilience and mental well-being.
Internationally recognized researchers and scholars in anthropology,
psychology and other fields will meet Feb. 11-13 at Korn Convocation
Hall to contribute to this many-faceted view of how childhood unfolds
in time and space. To learn more, visit www.thefpr.org/conference2005.
