LARRY GROBEL
Lecturer, English Department
A freelance writer whose interviews with Truman Capote, Linus Pauling,
Richard Feynman and others filled numerous newspapers, magazines
and eight books, including “The Art of the Interview,”
Grobel got his first taste of success as a writer at 15 when he
won a statewide essay contest in New Jersey, where he grew up.
What are a few of your most interesting interviews?
My 10 days with Marlon Brando on his island in Tahiti; traveling
through West Virginia with Dolly Parton on her bus; riding in a
car for 12 hours with Coach Bobby Knight and almost getting thrown
out of it twice.
What is your greatest achievement?
Our two daughters, Maya, 24, and Hana, 21. After them, simply surviving
as a freelance writer.
What is your most treasured possession?
A three-page letter from Marlon Brando, some very rare inscribed
first editions by Capote, Norman Mailer, Joseph Heller, James A.
Michener and J.P. Donleavy, and a satin jacket that once belonged
to Bruce Springsteen.
