Acting
Chief of Police Karl Ross has been appointed the
new UCLA chief of police, replacing former Chief Clarence Chapman,
who retired in December. Assistant chief of police since 1990, Ross
has been functioning as the acting chief for the past year and a
half. Known to be an effective and respected manager and leader
during his UCLA service, he is well qualified to continue the fine
service and tradition of the police department, said Administrative
Vice Chancellor Peter W. Blackman.... Gary Garrels
will serve as the Hammer Museum’s new senior curator, effective
at the end of May. He is currently chief curator of the Department
of Drawings and curator of the Department of
Painting and Sculpture at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. At
the Hammer, he will be involved in organizing exhibitions as well
as focusing on the development of the museum’s new contemporary
collection. Garrels is recognized for his internationally acclaimed
exhibitions and his strength in developing museum collections at
several of the country’s most highly regarded institutions....
Greg Pottie, associate dean
for research and physical resources and an electrical engineering
professor, and Electrical Engineering Professor Jason Woo
were elected Fellows of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics
Engineers. Pottie was recognized for “contributions to the
modeling and applications of wireless sensor networks,” and
Woo for his work on nanoscale silicon on insulator and bulk metal
oxide semiconductor device physics and technology.

Svenson, a former vice chancellor who currently serves
as a key member of the Anderson School’s Fully Employed MBA
(FEMBA) Program and as senior adviser to the school’s Harold
Price Center for Entrepreneurial Studies, was honored on Dec. 11
by the Finnish government with the Knight, First Class, of the Order
of the White Rose of Finland. Svenson received the honor in recognition
of his work, through Anderson’s Global Access Program, to
improve the competitiveness of Finnish technology companies. Through
these efforts, he has helped these companies expand into markets
abroad.... The Department of Neurology at the David
Geffen School of Medicine has been designated a regional Center
of Excellence by the Huntington’s Disease Society of America.
The designation includes $50,000 a year in funding to help support
a multidisciplinary team of health-care professionals with expertise
in Huntington’s disease (HD). The team will provide comprehensive
medical and social services as well as education, outreach and research
opportunities to the HD community.... In a Dec. 15 ceremony, Bank
of America Market President Chris Frank presented Bruce
Willison, dean of the Anderson School, with a $100,000
check to support the UCLA Anderson Forecast. The forecast is one
of the most widely watched and often-cited economic outlooks for
California and the nation. Through the generosity of Bank of America,
the forecast’s March conference will focus on business growth
in an uncertain economy.
