Mary Crawford
Graduate Adviser, Music and Ethno-
musicology; UCLA Carillon Player
Crawford began working at UCLA in 1970 as a staff accompanist and
part-time office help in the Music Department, pausing to complete
her master’s degree at Occidental College. Although the bells
that chime regularly on campus are prerecorded, Crawford is called
upon to play the carillon on major occasions.
Which living person do you most admire?
My mom. She is a woman of deep faith, but still has her own opinions
— and they can be surprisingly modern, especially for a woman
of 90!
What is the most overrated virtue?
Individuality. We often overlook the fact that we live in community
with others.
What is your favorite carillon piece?
“Garlands” by Professor Roger Bourland, written for
Chancellor Albert Carnesale’s inauguration. It is a piece
written for this carillon, not an arrangement of a piece written
for another instrument. As such, it captures the joy of the occasion
and the unique sounds of this instrument. |
