APPLAUSE
Academic
Senate Chair Kathleen L. Komar, professor of comparative
literature and German, became president of the American Comparative
Literature Association at the organization’s national conference
in March. Komar, who had been vice president of the organization,
will serve two years. The association is the professional organization
for scholars of comparative literature in the United States, but
also includes members from abroad.... Kuo-Nan Liou,
professor of atmospheric sciences, has been elected a member of
the Academia Sinica (the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Taiwan), in
the Mathematics and Physical Sciences Division. He was one of 17
new members.... The UCLA Alumni Association has selected two graduate
students and three seniors as recipients of the 2005 UCLA Awards,
to be presented at a ceremony May 15 at Covel Commons. The outstanding
graduate students are Rita Wadhwani, a neonatal
intensive-care nurse who will receive her master’s degree
in nursing this June, and Manisha Sisodia, a fourth-year
dental student who will be awarded her D.D.S. degree. Among the
seniors receiving awards are Molly Crockett, a
psychobiology
student, Jennifer Lauren Lee, an English major,
and Francine Maigue, who graduated this winter
with a major in world arts and cultures.... Dorothy McGarry,
retired head of the Cataloging Division of the Physical Sciences
and Technology Libraries, is the recipient of the 2005 Margaret
Mann Citation presented by the Association for Library Collections
and Technical Services, American Library Association. A $2,000 scholarship
will be donated in her honor to the library school of her choice.
ACCLAMATIONS
Leonard
Apt, professor of ophthalmology and founding director of
the Division of Pediatric Ophthalmology, was honored at the annual
meeting of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology.
Edwin M. Stone, professor of ophthalmology at the University of
Iowa, delivered the Leonard Apt Honorary Lecture titled “Practical
Aspects of Genetic Testing for Inherited Eye Disease.” The
Apt Lecture is sponsored by the American Academy of Pediatrics Ophthalmology
Section.... Steven E. Jacobsen, a plant biologist
whose research on a weed has led to new understanding of an important
mechanism for regulating gene expression in developing organisms,
has been named an investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
A professor of molecular, cell and developmental biology, he is
one of the nation’s 43 most promising scientists named by
the institute.
IN MEMORIAM
A celebration of the life of Norman P. Miller,
founding director of the UCLA Office of Cultural and Recreational
Affairs and a vice chancellor of Student Affairs, will be held April
19 from 4-6 p.m. at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center. The establishment
of the center nearly 40 years ago was due to his leadership. To
