'Round and About

PROJECT BOOTUP

Students in Engineers Without Borders at the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science are working this summer to help Dorsey High School students in South Los Angeles build their own computers to help with schoolwork. Computer parts come from personal and corporate donations as well as from UCLA departments that have replaced old computers. Said Christine Lee, president of the student group: “Project BOOTUP is a way for us to use our technical skills to help the community while also showing the importance and economy of doing things sustainably.”

CHEAPER RIDES

Transportation Services is partnering with Metro of Los Angeles County to offer a 50% subsidized quarterly transit pass for staff, faculty and students beginning this fall. The quarterly GO Metro pass will, on average, cost students $43 and staff/faculty $74 per quarter, good for unlimited travel on all Metro Bus and Metro Rail service. For the upcoming Fall Quarter, the pass can be purchased online and at the UCLA Central Ticket Office beginning Sept. 6. In addition, the BruinGo! program, currently on summer hiatus, will return this fall. It will be valid on weekends as well as weekdays to match the new GO Metro pass. For details, go to www.transportation.ucla.edu.

NEW SECURITY STANDARDS

UCLA’s Information Technology Planning Board is establishing a new campuswide policy defining minimum security standards for any device (computer, printer, research instrument, PDA, etc.) that connects to the UCLA network. The board is interested in getting comments on the draft policy from faculty, staff and students. The proposed standards, set to take effect in October, will help significantly mitigate data and security breaches. Computer users must also make sure that any personal computing device that connects to the network complies with this policy. Other IT security policies are being developed. To read the policy and comment by the June 30 deadline, go to www.adminvc.ucla.edu/appm/draft_policy.html.
