With 1.5 tons of scrap wood collected off the streets of New York and from other sources, artist Phoebe Washburn created a sprawling installation with the help of UCLA students, electric drills and screws. “It Has No Secret Surprise” covers the walls along the Hammer Museum’s grand staircase and swells and flows like a river of wood. Washburn has hidden a surprise behind trapdoors and windows in the piece. Created for the Hammer Projects, it will come down after Feb. 12, 2006, and resurface in a different form at another museum. |
