Alma Corbell, a graduate student in the School of Nursing, received the Edward Roybal Public Health Policy Fellowship, sponsored by the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute in Washington, D.C. She was among 20 fellows chosen in the United States and one of only three graduate students.... World Arts and Cultures Professor Peter Sellars was presented with the 2005 Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize Sept. 29 at the Hudson Theater in New York City. The prize is awarded to an individual who contributes to the beauty of the world and the enjoyment and understanding of life through the performing arts. A stage director and librettist, Sellars produced a new opera by John Adams, “Doctor Atomic,” which recently premiered in San Francisco..... E. Carmack Holmes, former department chair and surgeon-in-chief at UCLA Medical Center and current executive director of UCLA’s Center for Advanced Surgical and Interventional Technology, was named an honorary member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. The award recognizes Holmes’ contributions to his profession as well as his links to Scotland, where he has lectured on several occasions.... Among those recently appointed to new positions at the university was Timothy Rice, named associate dean for academic affairs at the School of the Arts and Architecture. Rice succeeds Professor Hiromi Lorraine Sakata, who has retired. Replacing Rice, Jacqueline Cogdell DjeDje is the new chair of the Department of Ethnomusicology.... At the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science, Professor Ali Sayed has been named the new chair of the Department of Electrical Engineering. Professor Jason Cong has been appointed the new chair of the Department of Computer Science.... Tony Torres of Housing and Hospitality Services won the 2005 San Francisco Marathon in 2:31:57, and is set to run in the Lake Tahoe Marathon Oct. 8. Torres works at the UCLA Conference Center and Bruin Woods Family Resort in Lake Arrowhead.... Professor of Neurology Bruce H. Dobkin was named a Distinguished Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians for research, writing and clinical care in neurological rehabilitation. Dobkin, director of the UCLA Neurologic Rehabilitation and Research Program, also became editor-in-chief of the journal Neurorehabilitation and Neural Repair.
