Marcia J. Bates , a professor in the Department of Information Studies in the Graduate School of Education & Information Studies, will receive the Award of Merit from the American Society for Information Science and Technology. The award recognizes the lasting importance of her theoretical and conceptual contributions to the field, her influence as a scholar and her leadership as an educator. She will receive her award Nov. 1 at the society’s an-
nual conference in Charlotte, N.C.

Russel Caflisch, mathematics professor, has been awarded $630,000 by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science to apply sophisticated mathematics to complex problems in plasma physics. Having conducted research on nano­technology and computational finance, Caflisch and his research team will develop algorithms to solve plasma physics problems.

 

Khalil Tabsh, chief of the Division of Obstetrics and Gynecology at
the David Geffen School of Medicine, received a 2005 California Immigrant Achievement Award. Born in Beirut, Lebanon, Tabsh is a renowned researcher, academician and clinician. He specializes in the care of pregnant women with severe maternal and/or fetal complications. The award, presented by the American Immigration Law Foundation, was given Sept. 29 at the Millennium Hotel in Los Angeles.

The Higher Education Research Institute at UCLA’s Graduate School of Education & Information Studies recently announced the appointment of John H. Pryor as associate director of the institute and director of the Cooperative Institutional Research Program. Pryor’s responsibilities include coordinating survey development and administration, and advancing the use of the data for institutional planning and national research in higher education.
