Ellen Broidy, head of collections, research and instructional services in the Charles E. Young Research Library, has won the 2005 Career Achievement Award presented by the Association of College and Research Libraries’ Women’s Studies Section. The award honors significant, long-standing contributions to women’s studies in the field of librarianship over the course of a career. For her accomplishments in publications, presentations and teaching, Broidy received a $1,000 prize and a plaque at the American Library Association annual conference in Chicago.... The Jules Stein Eye Institute has been ranked among the top three ophthalmology programs overall in the country and the best in the western United States by the trade publication Ophthalmology Times. The publication’s annual Best Programs survey recognizes excellence in the teaching and development of residents, patient care and the pursuit of new frontiers in ophthalmic medicine.... Donald P. Becker, W. Eugene Stern Professor of Neurosurgery, has been named senior associate dean for academic affairs at the David Geffen School of Medicine, effective Dec. 1. In addition, the Division of Neurosurgery presented Becker with a Visionary Award at its inaugural Visionary Ball fund-raiser on Oct. 20. He is known as a world leader in fundamental research into the mechanisms of brain tissue and brain cellular injury and recovery from trauma, attendant ischemia and intracranial pressure.... For the sixth consecutive year, the Disneyland Resort Cast Community Fund has awarded a $5,000 grant to UCLA’s TIES for Adoption Project for its services and achievement. The UCLA-based program prepares and supports adoptive families of foster children and works to reduce barriers to successful placement of foster children with special needs.
