Patricia Ganz, director of cancer prevention and control research at UCLA’s Jonsson Cancer Center, has received the prestigious Jill Rose Award, an honor given to top cancer scientists by the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Ganz was honored for her extraordinary research accomplishments, which have changed the way doctors and patients deal with the physical and psychological quality-of-life issues that follow breast cancer treatment.
Oddvar Bendiksen, professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, received the Institution of Mechanical Engineers’ premier award, the Thomas Hawksley Gold Medal, for his paper, “Modern Developments in Computational Aeroelasticity.” Earlier this year, Bendiksen received the Kenneth Harris James Prize from the institution’s Aerospace Industries Divisional Board for the same paper.
Nasr M. Ghoniem, professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, has been selected as one of five members of the International Advisory Oversight Committee for the European project “PERFECT: For Prediction of Irradiation Damage Effects on Reactor Components.” The main objective of PERFECT is to build two “virtual reactors” simulating the effect of irradiation on reactor pressure vessels and on internal structures.
Neal Stulberg has joined the Department of Music as visiting director of orchestral studies. A recipient of the Seaver/NEA Conductors Award, he has served as music director of the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra and as assistant conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic under Carlo Maria Giulini. An acclaimed pianist, he performs as a recitalist and chamber musician and appears with major orchestras and at international festivals.
