The UCLA Medical Center has become one of only seven California hospitals to earn Magnet status from the American Nurses Credentialing Center, a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association. The designation recognizes health-care facilities that deliver the top tier in nursing practice and patient care. “Magnet status is nursing’s top honor, and is accepted as the national gold standard in nursing excellence,” said Heidi Crooks, chief nursing executive and senior associate director of operations and patient care services.... Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Professor Neil Morley has been elected to the executive committee of the American Nuclear Society Fusion Energy Division for a three-year term.... Gerald Buckberg, professor of cardiothoracic surgery at the Geffen School of Medicine, was honored with the 2005 Freddie Award in the category of Basic and Clinical Science at the International Health and Medical Media Awards in New York City. Buckberg’s entry, “The Helical Heart,” is an educational DVD that illuminates a modern revolution in cardiac anatomy. Among the experts it features is F. Torrent-Guasp, a cardiologist who used hand dissection to literally unwind the heart’s “rope-like” helical structure and reveal its ventricular myocardial band.... Terry Morello has been named executive director for external affairs for the School of the Arts and Architecture. Morello has worked in the arts for more than 20 years, most recently at UCLA Live, where she had been director of development since 2001.
