NEWS in brief

Would the last one out please shut the lights?

Employees can help save energy by shutting down equipment and appliances before leaving for the winter closure. UCLA will close Dec. 24 through Jan. 2 to save energy in the face of a $12-million to $16-million shortfall in its state-funded utilities budget. So turn off all computers, printers, fax machines, shredders and lab equipment. Lower thermostats or switch them off. Don’t forget to close all windows and exterior doors. Go to www.fm.ucla.edu for more details.

Safeguard your office

While employees take time off during the winter closure to relax, identity thieves and other criminals can use the opportunity to ply their trade on campus. The UC Police Department has a few tips on how you can make your workspace secure before leaving your office on Dec. 23.

• Leave doors and windows locked.

• Reset locks and/or alarms on timers to cover the closure schedule.

• Report any broken or flickering lights, broken doors, windows or other locking equipment to Facilities Management at (310) 825-9236.

• Leave valuables in a secure location or take them home.

• Turn off copiers, printers, scanners and computers and secure critical files.

• Do not leave computer passwords or lock combinations where they might be found.

• Reinforce building security procedures prior to the holiday closure.

• Report suspicious activity to the UC police at (310) 825-1491.
