Names & Faces

Joel D. Aberbach, UCLA Distinguished Professor of Political Science and Public Policy, has been invited to spend the coming academic year at Oxford University as the John G. Winant Visiting Professor of American Government, a professorship named for the U.S. ambassador to the Court of St. James during World War II. He will also be a fellow of Balliol College at Oxford.

Vijay K. Dhir, dean of the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science, has been elected to the National Academy of Engineering, the highest professional honor accorded to an American engineer. Academy membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to engineering research, practice or education. Dhir was honored for his work on boiling heat transfer and nuclear reactor thermal hydraulics and safety.

Eric Fonkalsrud, professor of surgery and emeritus chief of pediatric surgery at the Geffen School of Medicine, has reached a surgical milestone: He recently completed his 1,000th pectus repair surgery. Fonkalsrud is a pioneer in this surgery to correct pectus excavatum, commonly known as funnel or sunken chest syndrome, and pectus carinatum, also called pigeon or chicken breast, in which the chest cavity is pushed outward.
